Hi! Your blog is really helpful, and congrats on graduating! I am just about to graduate from undergrad and have gone through the whole thing as pre-med. However, I’ve realized that’s not really what my heart is and am veering strongly toward PT. I’m having trouble completing my decision though, because I don’t really know much about PT other then what I’ve experienced as a patient. Other than shadowing, how did you decide it was right for you?

The way I made my decision was by talking to a PT and hearing what he had to say about the field. I later worked as  PT aide for him and with that immersion knew that it was the right field for me. My advice for you would be to try to shadow a few […]

I recently heard some kind words from a reader. She said: “Just because yesterday was the commitment day I wanted to share with you that I have committed to a 3+3 DPT program. I’ve wanted to be a PT since my freshman year in high school and I took AP chem last year to look

Begin rant.

One of my best days so far as a PT-in-training has been when one of my patients walked for the first time in months as well. Like you, I also cried. She was a very special woman and I’m honored to have played a role in helping her recover. Our job can be amazingly rewarding!

Hey Jasmine! At your time at school, I’m sure you heard a lot about your classmates’ treks to get into PT school. I’m taking a year off before applying to school, and I need to retake four classes that I received C’s in to increase my chances of getting in. Do you know anyone in your class or any other aspiring PT student who went through the same thing? I’m a little uneasy that having to retake those courses are going to jeopardize my chances of getting accepted. Thanks!

I have a heard a lot about my classmates’ paths to PT school. Probably about half took at least a year off before applying, so that part should be fine. I’m really not sure if anyone spent that year retaking four classes. I assume that wasn’t the case, but then again, if that was true

versaceisthenewgucci: What kind of job is similar to physical therapy, but deals with the psychological factors from their injury along with the physical aspects? Hi Jasmine! I’m a junior in high school and over the summer I volunteered for the outpatient clinic at the VA Hospital. With over 110 hours, I became close with many of the PTs and PTAs. As only a high school student, what else can I do to prepare me for college? Should I start memorizing the muscles and bones of the body now? Or wait until college? What more can I do?

It won’t hurt to look at muscles and bones, but you’ll memorize them when you have to for class, so don’t drive yourself crazy with it now. I would keep trying to get as much PT experience as possible now. Since you’ve done outpatient, try shadowing in a hospital, school, nursing home, or other settings
