So, you’re starting or finishing PT school soon and a loving friend or family member has asked what they can get you. Or maybe you are the generous buddy searching for the perfect present for a special future DPT in your life.
How should you know what to get? Let’s start with this question first: What do you need when starting PT school? Or, what do you need when beginning your career?
This might be obvious, but the number one best present no matter the situation is almost always cash. And given the cost of attending PT school, this one is a no-brainer. Any aspiring PT will appreciate a check or gift card, however, if asking for or giving money doesn’t seem right to you, here are some other gift ideas:
- Professional clothing. Whether you’re starting a new job or going to begin clinicals soon, it can’t hurt to have some business casual clothing or a gift card to a store that sells work appropriate clothing.
- An iPad or laptop. Depending on what you might think will work best for you to haul to class to take notes, download lectures, and work on projects. If there’s one big ticket item you’ll need, this might be it.
- A planner and notebooks to stay on top of all the many tests, quizzes, labs, and assignments in physical therapy school.
- An anatomy coloring book. Many PT students swear by these for getting through the first semester. They’re useful for studying and can help combat stress.
- An insulated lunch box and/or travel mug for bringing food and drinks to class each day. When you’re in class all day, it helps to bring lunch and snacks that can last several hours.
- A comfortable backpack. Self-explanatory.
- Stickers! Check out my Etsy shop for cute, inexpensive stickers you can stick on your laptop, phone case, or anything else to show off your future profession!
- An app subscription. There are many different apps that can be used to make flashcards, learn anatomy, or study for the boards. Depending your study habits, these can be helpful. Quizlet is one I’ve seen mentioned several times.
- Cheat sheets. Several companies make pocket guides or clipboards that summarize helpful PT information that students can quickly reference, especially during clinical rotations.
- Gym clothes. Most PTs and students enjoy a good workout, and hitting the gym is a great way to destress.
What not to buy: I’ve seen people suggest PT presents such as blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, goniometers, reflex hammers, and gait belts, and while helpful, many PT schools provide these for their students. Don’t waste your money on these unless you’re sure they’ll be needed.
Good luck gifting!
