I don’t know exactly what to say this week and worry that I won’t get it right, but I also believe that saying something is better than silence. That’s why I’ve postponed the post I had originally planned for this week about PTCAS and want to make a statement about racism:
I am anti-racism.
I am trying to better educate myself, and am open to further resources and suggestions, but I want to take a stance against racism.
There are resources all over the internet with different ways to educate yourself and help out, and I wanted to share a few things I’ve found from a physical therapy perspective:
- Amplify black voices. Some accounts to follow that highlight black physical therapists include:
- The National Association of Black Physical Therapists
- Physical Therapists of Color
- Women of Color in PT
- Black Girl Physical Therapy
- Educate yourself.
- I’ve signed up to take this course next week. It is called “Anti-racism and Allyship for Rehab and Movement Professionals,” and it is a webinar by Dr. Jennifer Hunton, DPT, a pediatric physical therapist.
- Dr Shanté Cofield, DPT, OCS, CSCS, aka The Movement Maestro, discusses racism on her latest podcast.
- Fitness Coach Chrissy King is hosting webinars called Anti-Racism for Wellness Professionals
- Dr. Amber Brown, PT, DPT is hosting an Instagram Live tonight on Physical Therapy and Race
- Donate without giving money. I know not everyone is in a position to donate money at the moment, but there are a few things you can do within a movement perspective that will cause larger organizations to donate on your behalf:
- Participate in Global Running Day with Brooks. If you register to run this week (any distance), they will donate to the Equal Justice Initiative on your behalf.
