During crises, it is often the stories from the medical field that hit me the hardest and with the recent devastating hurricane hitting Texas, the same has been true.
Here are two articles about Hurricane Harvey that have made impressions on me:
1. This story about a surgeon who kayaked through the storm to perform live-changing surgery despite his own house flooding. Last winter when we closed our office during a storm so bad the NY Governor ordered all roads closed, I remember thinking, “Our patients can miss their appointments for the day, but what about patients whose lives are in danger?”
2. This story about a nurse helping endangered infants evacuate. As a premie myself, these stories are especially meaningful.
I recently made a donation through a charity I’ve donated to in the past, and I hope that if you are able to donate, you will do so as well. For starters, here is a list of organizations accepting donations with tips to avoid scams.
